The so called ‘New York second’ has moved across the pond and is prevalent in most UK cities. You know who you are, you ‘tutt’ at dawdlers who move a glacial speeds or the ones who decide to stop suddenly to read a text or shout expletives at the ones who are still sitting at a green traffic light nanoseconds after it has changed from amber.

The world has listened and we are to have fast lanes on a local city pavement soon we are told. St John’s street in the city is the first to be blessed with the sramblers highway and once feedback and monitoring is in, apparently this will be rolled out throughout the country!

Argos research showed that 69% of the younger population of 16-24 year olds thought it was a great idea whilst the older generation of 55 and above 75% were not so sure – no surprises there then, given that the older generation are less likely to use them and are more likely to be ones ’tutted’ at. It does seem a more organised way of moving through the hoards of people, especially in places like Oxford Street and busy areas because you can always guarantee that the day you have to be somewhere an hour ago everyone who has all the time in the world is walking in front of you. Every. Single. Person.

In Europe, those laid back Belgians see it a different way and have also created separate walking lanes but not for those who are in a rush but for those who are too busy texting to look where they are going. It seems those Belgians have different priorities to us in the UK and care more for those idiots people who have their face engrossed in their device and not on their direction so pedestrian collisions are common. The thinking behind these lanes is one of protection for the device as apparently one mobile company report repairing over 35,000 mobile devices in a single day due to carelessness of their owners but maybe priorities are not quite right here as there seems to be an acceptance for a lack of responsibility here.
